Objective
The fundamental objective of the CNM is to act as the national reference institution, and one of the international ones, in providing innovative scientific-technical responses for the prevention and control of infections in humans.
In this sense, it carries out its work by developing the following objectives and activities
Scientific-technical Services
The CNM provides different scientific-technical services, such as:
- Prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
- Study of emerging or rare human infections.
- Characterization and control of outbreaks.
- Control of natural or intentional health public alerts.
- Detection of antimicrobial resistance.
- Evaluation of vaccines against human pathogens.
- Training, teaching and consultacy on human microbiology.
Development of quality biomedical research
- Research in infectious pathology based on the use of advanced techniques. This research is mainly focused on the characterization of molecular processes related to infection such as pathogenesis, the search for therapeutic targets, pathogenic variability or the development of new diagnostic techniques.
- Technological innovation to improve the diagnosis and characterization of viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.
- Immunology aimed at diseases caused by microorganisms: generation and regulation of the immune response, inflammation and pathogenesis
Promotion of multidisciplinary scientific-technical collaboration with institutions similar to the CNM
The CNM promotes and encourages multidisciplinary collaboration with other institutions similar to the CNM, both national and international, and other institutions of the NHS. These collaborations are grouped into:
- Coordinated research projects.
- Research networks and national and international surveillance.
- National strategies to control infectious diseases.
- Specialized courses.
- Advanced technologies.
