Toxoplasmosis y Protozoos intestinales
Estudio de zoonosis y enfermedades emergentes originadas por protozoos con especial interés en:
• Toxoplasmosis: Desarrollo de diagnóstico inmunológico y molecular en casos congénitos e inmunocomprometidos. Caracterización de aislados de Toxoplasma gondii de origen humano y animal, relación con epidemiología y virulencia.
• Protozoosis intestinales: Diagnóstico, caracterización, epidemiología y dinámicas de transmisión de las enfermedades ocasionadas por Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Blastocystis y Entamoeba histolytica, en el ámbito humano y animal. Asociaciones entre estos parásitos y la microbiota intestinal.
• Amebas de Vida Libre: Desarrollo de diagnóstico de Acanthamoeba, Naegleria fowleri y Balamuthia mandrillaris. Estudios de casos oftalmológicos y neurológicos. Detección en el hombre, animales y medioambiente. Relevancia e implicaciones en la epidemiología y control.

Nuestro grupo realiza estudios de investigación en el diagnóstico, referencia y epidemiología de zoonosis y enfermedades emergentes, tanto autóctonas como importadas, originadas por protozoos. Coordina el estudio en el ámbito humano con la relevancia del ámbito animal y del medioambiente (iniciativa One Health), con especial interés en:
La toxoplasmosis, zoonosis de alta prevalencia (OMS la señala como 3º zoonosis de origen alimentario en Europa), presenta un ciclo epidemiológico complejo y ocasiona sintomatología neurológica, ocular y sistémica. Realizamos estudios de diagnóstico y caracterización de Toxoplasma gondii procedentes de casos humanos y de animales, para obtener una mayor información epidemiológica y analizar la posible relación con la virulencia y patología.
Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Blastocystis y Entamoeba histolytica, ocasionan enfermedades gastrointestinales, afectando a la población infantil, inmunodeprimidos y viajeros. Pueden originar brotes. Desarrollamos estudios de diagnóstico y caracterización de aislados de humanos y animales, de distintas áreas y países, para establecer la presencia de las principales especies y genotipos y la situación epidemiológica. Estamos iniciando el estudio de asociaciones entre estos parásitos y la microbiota intestinal.
Las Amebas de Vida Libre patógenas, Acanthamoeba, Naegleria fowleri y Balamuthia mandrillaris, originan enfermedades emergentes destacando la importancia del medioambiente en la transmisión. Ocasionan casos neurológicos y oculares infradiagnosticados. El estudio de diagnóstico y del genotipado de aislados de humanos y animales que estamos realizando tiene como objetivo establecer la prevalencia real, vías de transmisión y epidemiología.
