Este grupo, junto con el Laboratorio de Serología del CNM (LS), alberga los Laboratorios Nacionales de Referencia de Rabia (RD 1940/2004) y Sarampión y Rubéola (Plan Nacional de Eliminación) que están integrados en las correspondientes redes europeas. Tiene 10 técnicas de desarrollo propio en cartera de servicios (2 acreditadas por ENAC y 3 por la OMS). Además, atiende tres programas de vigilancia microbiológica del CNM (sarampión y rubéola, parotiditis y rabia). Está integrado en un grupo CIBERESP del que es jefe Juan E. Echevarría y en el que participan otros investigadores del CNM.
La investigación en enfermedades de la vacuna triple vírica se financia actualmente a través de un proyecto AESI (PI15CIII/00023) de quien es co-IP Aurora Fernández García y en el que participa el LS, el CNE, la CAM (LRSP y el Servicio de Epidemiología) y una red de pediatras de atención primaria de la CAM.
La investigación en lisavirus y otros virus asociados a murciélagos se financia actualmente a través del proyecto VIROBAT-4 (MINECO, SAF 2017-89355-P) del que es IP Juan E. Echevarría y en el que participa el Laboratorio de Virus Respiratorios del CNM, la Estación Biológica de Doñana (CSIC) y la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares.
