La Unidad de Neumococos se encarga de dos aspectos muy importantes relacionados con las infecciones por neumococo como son la vigilancia epidemiológica y la investigación básica y traslacional de las enfermedades producidas por este patógeno. Nuestra unidad contribuye a la vigilancia epidemiológica de la enfermedad neumocócica invasiva (ENI), caracterizando los serotipos y genotipos de neumococos invasivos que circulan en España, así como la evolución de la resistencia antibiótica en este patógeno. Se realiza identificación de muestras de cultivo negativo (LCR y líquidos pleurales) mediante PCR a tiempo real. El serotipado se realiza mediante la técnica de Dot-blot y PCR-secuenciación. El genotipado para el estudio de brotes y caracterización de clones asociados a cepas hipervirulentas y/o multirresistentes, se realiza mediante la técnica de MLST y el análisis de genomas completos por secuenciación masiva. Además, se determina la susceptibilidad antibiótica siguiendo los criterios EUCAST. Nuestra unidad pertenece a la red IBD-labnet del ECDC y notifica anualmente todos los casos de ENI al ECDC y también a la red IRIS (Invasive Respiratory Infection Surveillance) A nivel de investigación básica y traslacional, nuestra unidad se encarga de estudiar y caracterizar diferentes mecanismos moleculares de patogenicidad y protección relacionados con la infección neumocócica. Entre los principales objetivos destacan la caracterización molecular de factores de virulencia, el estudio de diferentes proteínas candidatas a vacunas y determinar el posible impacto que tiene el humo de tabaco y la formación de biofilms en la colonización del tracto respiratorio.
