La Unidad de Leishmaniasis y Enfermedad de Chagas da apoyo al Sistema Nacional de Salud mediante un enfoque multidisciplinar que incluye el desarrollo y validación de pruebas de diagnóstico, la caracterización molecular de los parásitos, la epidemiología molecular, los estudios de campo, así como la investigación experimental de nuevos enfoques terapéuticos y profilácticos para su control.
El laboratorio cuenta con una amplia experiencia en la caracterización de la respuesta inmune celular y humoral de la leishmaniasis y el seguimiento post-tratamiento, así como en individuos asintomáticos y en modelos animales experimentales. El laboratorio también contribuye a los estudios inmunológicos de la patogénesis de la leishmaniasis en condiciones inmunosupresoras (coinfección VIH/Leishmania, malnutrición, tratamiento inmunosupresores...). El laboratorio es Centro Colaborador de la OMS para Leishmaniasis desde 1997, dando apoyo técnico a las diversas actividades de investigación y capacitación de la OMS y participando en la evaluación de brotes de leishmaniasis humana en países endémicos.
El laboratorio también participa en la evaluación de marcadores de pronóstico de la evolución de la infección con T. cruzi y la transmisión vertical (transplacentaria), un importante problema de salud pública en nuestro país. Además lleva a cabo estudios sobre la farmacocinética de los fármacos contra la enfermedad de Chagas.
