Babesiosis
Babesiosis y Babesia divergens: investigación y diagnóstico.
Babesia es un parásito Apicomplexa capaz de infectar los eritrocitos de una amplia variedad de vertebrados y causar babesiosis. La enfermedad, transmisible por picadura de garrapata, transfusión y vía congénita, está ampliamente distribuida a nivel mundial afectando al humano, a los animales de consumo, de compañía y a los animales salvajes. El conocimiento sobre la biología del parásito y la capacidad para diagnosticar y tratar la enfermedad son aspectos que requieren de una amplia mejora. Así, esta línea pretende elucidar aspectos biológicos básicos y solventar las deficiencias que giran en torno a Babesia y la babesiosis.

B. divergens es el agente causal en Europa de la fiebre del agua roja en el ganado y la forma más severa de la babesiosis humana, provocando la muerte en el 40% de los casos. Además, B. divergens es un modelo in vitro excelente para el estudio de la biología básica de los parásitos Apicomplexa, algunos de ellos altamente patógenos como Plasmodium falciparum causante de la malaria y que, al igual que Babesia, infecta los eritrocitos humanos.
Nuestros objetivos están enfocados a investigar procesos vitales para la supervivencia del parásito B. divergens, en el interior del eritrocito humano y su posible extrapolación a P. falciparum. Así, estamos integrando la biología celular, molecular y la metabolómica para elucidar la arquitectura tridimensional de B. divergens, la cinética de diferenciación morfológica de los estadios que se suceden en el ciclo asexual del parásito, los mecanismos moleculares de propagación y el perfil metabólico que desencadena el parásito como consecuencia de su activad e interacción con su célula huésped.
Este estudio integral podrá asentar las bases para la identificación de biomarcadores de diagnóstico y patológicos que ayuden al seguimiento de infecciones activas en hospedadores vertebrados, así como para el desarrollo de vacunas y tratamientos eficaces.
